Russian chess player Jan Nepomniachtchi defeated Pole Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the sixth round of the Candidates Tournament. This is reported by the correspondent of “Lenta.ru”.
The meeting took place on Thursday, June 23, in Madrid. The Russian played with white pieces, and his opponent resigned on the 35th move. This victory was Nepomniachtchi’s third in the tournament.
After six rounds, the Russian has 4.5 points, he remained the leader of the tournament. Behind him is the American Fabiano Caruana with four points. Several grandmasters scored three points each.
Nepomniachtchi is playing at the tournament, which will end on July 5, as a neutral athlete. The winner of the competition will have the right to compete for the world title with the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
Last December, Carlsen beat Nepomniachtchi 7.5:3.5. The defeat of the Russian grandmaster in the decisive match of the World Championship was the largest since 1993.
