Personal data leakage has serious consequences, but we are not aware of all of them. What does the apartment sale scam have in common with illegally obtained data? It turns out that fraudsters can use them to forge an ID and then try to sell the property.

The media and, above all, experts dealing with network security have been warning about data leaks and the consequences associated with them for a long time. Some time ago, almost 300 payers, including names and surnames, addresses, PESEL numbers and ID cards. Information is also leaked from online stores and even . , but the leak may also be our fault. The consequences can be serious.

Personal data leakage is something we should never underestimate. Why? Most people think primarily about people taking out loans on the basis of information obtained in this way, but this is not the only problem. It turns out that such a fraudster can even… sell our apartment. A few years ago, a high-profile verdict was passed in such a case.

Fraudsters using a “collector’s ID” may try to sell an apartment or real estate, including an uninhabited plot. All the data needed to forge a document can be found, among others: in the list of land and mortgage registers, after the leak, but it also happens that it comes from an unsuspecting victim. After finding a buyer, fraudsters go to a notary and sign the contract there. The merchant pays and the fraudster disappears with the money. This was also the case in the 2021 case.

A person claiming to be the president of the company showed up on behalf of the seller. The notary checked the parties’ identity documents, which did not raise any doubts about their validity and authenticity. The photos in the documents presented also matched the people who appeared at the office. The seller signed the notarial deed with an illegible signature, the same as the one on the certificate. The buyer paid the agreed price in cash in the amount of PLN 130,000. zloty.

How not to be deceived? First of all, pay attention to protecting your data. Do not send scans of your ID card or driving license unless necessary. Also check whether your data has been leaked. You can do this e.g. If you decide to buy real estate, e.g. after seeing an advertisement online, do not lose your vigilance. Particular attention should be paid to the exceptionally low price and reluctance to present the property. Any inaccuracy or ambiguity should raise suspicion.
