The new song was eagerly awaited by Smith’s fans, and the appetite was fueled by the previously shared song excerpt on TikTok. By the time the single was officially released, it had been used in over 300,000 videos created on this platform.
“Unholy” finally available
In “Unholy”, Smith tells the story of a husband cheating on his wife, who is played here by transgender singer Kim Petras. Her voice can be heard in the second verse and is balanced by Smith’s bold vocals.
The new song is a surprise for music fans. It sounds completely different from the well-known pop ballads. You can hear here heading towards R&B, where the bass is in the foreground, and the rhythmic beat gives the new song a chance to conquer the club’s dance floors.
The artist was very pleased with the collaboration with Petras. In a post on Instagram, he wrote that he had never had so much fun creating a new track as he did with “Unholy”. He also mentioned that experimenting with music and abandoning the current rules was very liberating for him.
In an interview for “Billboard” he revealed that the new album will be free from the theme of broken hearts and unsuccessful relationships. There is to be much more “joy” in it. And although it may seem that “Unholy” does not fit into this column, it can also be safely said that it does not fit into the canons of songs about unhappy love.
Before the song was released, what some suspected “Unholy” might turn out to be another Smith collaboration with the club duo Disclosure. Recordings of DJ performances began to appear on the web, where you can hear “Unholy” in the house version. Such news was fueled, for example, by the British radio station Capital Dance.
Later it turned out to be only a remix and the original version will be kept in a slower atmosphere. However, the Disclosure option could just as well warm up club halls this fall as the normal version of the song, which is sure to take over from this weekend.
