Until 2019, this religious and cultural celebration of the city was known as the Quinto Río de Cuenca, because more than 100,000 attendees gathered on the central Simón Bolívar street.

In 2020 it was replaced by a motorized tour and in 2021 by a vehicular caravan, because crowds were prohibited to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

But without sanitary restrictions, this year the meeting will return to the usual, “without limitations”, said Mario Calle, director of Communication in charge of the Archdiocese of Cuenca.

The proclamation will take place on December 9 with a smaller procession that will depart and return from the Monasterio del Carmen de la Asunción, located in front of the Plaza de las Flores.

It will be followed by a mass and serenade on the evening of the 23rd. then there will be a liturgy at 08:30 and at 10:00 it will start from the church of San Sebastián.

A novelty this year is the incorporation of new sponsors. Until last year they were uniformed from the National Police and the Ecuadorian Army, but it was decided that from now on a market and a lay group of the Catholic Church would be incorporated.

The market is on February 27 and the Catholic group, the Juan XXIII. Their job will be to coordinate control actions by creating a human cordon on all roads to guarantee order during the journey that usually lasts until 4:00 p.m.

Although it is a spontaneous party in which all those who want and can participate, the curia will issue safe-conducts for those who enter with the well-known floats. This document will be withdrawn between December 1 and 20 at the Curia’s Communications Secretariat, located on Simón Bolívar street.

Its issuance is free of charge, but it will give them priority when queuing from the afternoon of the 23rd. Those who do not obtain it may also participate, but must line up behind those accredited.

The only ones who will not be able to participate are the well-known cabezales, since their size is very large in relation to the narrow streets of the historic center. (YO)
