The offensive launched this friday for israel against Islamic Jihad targets in the occupied Gaza Strip is on track to become the largest escalation of violence since May 2021, with at least 15 Palestinians killed and 140 wounded.
At least 15 Palestinians have been injured, some seriously, in the new Israeli air raids on the north, center and south from the Gaza Strip. Palestinian media have reported missile attacks on several homes and facilities in Gaza City and in the towns of Beit Hanun, Beit Lahi and Jabalia, in northern Gaza, with ten people injured as a result, including two minors and a woman. .
Israel has also bombed an area near the Rafah crossing, in the southern Gaza Strip bordering Egypt, where three people have been injured, and two more Palestinians have been injured in Abasan, east of Khan Younis, one of them a minor who is in critical condition.
Rockets to Tel Aviv
In response, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) launched rockets this Saturday from Gaza towards the city of Tel Avivwhere anti-aircraft alarms sounded for the first time since the beginning of the current escalation of violence, although no hits were recorded as they were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system.
After having released more than 350 rockets since the beginning yesterday of the current spike in tension, Islamic Jihad fired for the first time today towards Tel Aviv, whose residents had to run to bomb shelters and heard the impact of interceptions.
According to local media, no damage or injuries were reported from these rockets, which come after a bloody second day of violence between the Israeli Army and the Palestinian group based in the Gaza Strip.
Just 20 Israeli wounded
From early morning and throughout the day, there were incessant attacks in both directions, including heavy Israeli shelling of the group’s targets and countless rocket fire from the Strip, especially towards border communities in southern Israel.
For its part, Israel registers some 20 wounded, most by injuries sustained while running to bomb sheltersin addition to two soldiers injured by the impact of a projectile.
The current spike in tension began this Friday with a strong Israeli “preemptive” offensive on Jihad targets in Gaza in the face of what the Army described as an “imminent threat” of attack by the group in retaliation after the arrest on Monday of one of their leaders during a raid in the occupied West Bank. Israel views Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s ties to Iran as making the group a satellite of Tehran, which is seen by the Jewish state as an existential threat.
