Italian Olympic champion Paolo Milanoli called the suspension of Russian athletes shameful
Olympic champion in fencing Italian Paolo Milanoli spoke about the removal of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions. His words are quoted by TASS.
“This is unacceptable. I want to appeal to the Russians and Belarusians: the decisions taken against you are a shame,” Milanoli said. He added that the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) distorts sporting values.
Earlier, Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Veronika Stepanova said that she was to some extent pleased with the removal of the Russians. “Starts in Russia are a good opportunity for me personally to solve local problems, to establish myself as a stable athlete,” she said.
At the end of February, many sports organizations banned the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. In some disciplines, such as motorsport, cycling, tennis and chess, Russians continue to compete without a flag.
