The Polish astronaut was supposed to fly to the Space Station in the fall. However, problems arose

The Polish astronaut’s mission to the International Space Station (ISS), planned for autumn, will most likely be postponed to a later date. “I hope that the date will be announced soon,” Sławosz Uznañski, project astronaut of the European Space Agency, told PAP.

“We have an approved Polish space mission that will take place, but we do not know the date of the flight today. This is due to the fact that it is a difficult process with many international partners (…) this process is long and agreeing on which mission will be on what date, “It takes some time. At the same time, training also takes some time. Here, too, we all have to be patient. I don’t know the date either. I hope the date will be announced soon,” said Sławosz Uznański, project astronaut of the European Agency, in an interview with PAP. Space.

When asked whether his mission would be postponed from the autumn date to a later date, he replied:

Yes. Most likely, the mission will be postponed

The Ministry of Development and Technology, the European Space Agency (ESA) and Axiom Space (an American company operating in the space industry), on August 4, 2023, signed agreements regarding the flight of a Polish astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).

In the course of preparations, last year ESA announced, together with the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), a competition addressed exclusively to the Polish space sector for the implementation of experiments on the ISS. Polish universities, institutes and companies submitted as many as 66 experiments, of which 18 were selected. However, it is still unknown how many of them will be performed by a Polish astronaut during a space mission initially planned for autumn 2024.

When asked about the number of experiments he will carry out on the ISS, Sławosz Uznański replied that the equipment needed to conduct them is still under construction and it is not known whether it will pass all safety tests, so “it is still impossible to provide the exact number of experiments.” However, in the case of experiments involving the use of astronaut’s medical parameters, Uznański will decide whether he wants to take part in them.

“All experiments that touch on my medical data go through the medical ethics committee. I have the right to consent or not to the collection of medical data from my body (…) No experiment has been presented to me yet,” Uznański said.

The Polish astronaut, I don’t know who he will go into space with. Still waiting for the crew

The astronaut is still waiting for the announcement of the crew with whom he will fly to the ISS. “The crew has not been assigned or announced. And this is one of the blocking points for today to start joint training,” Uznański admitted. He also noted that this type of process, which drags on over time, is “absolutely natural” in the case of space missions.

Once the crew is announced, it will begin intensive training with elements of integration. The group’s ability to cooperate in extreme conditions will also be tested. “There is part of the training in extreme conditions, where the crew is locked in a cave or carries out an expedition in the mountains,” Uznański revealed.
