The Ministry of Energy and Mines (mine) recently granted the authorization of the commercial operation to the mining project Quellavecolocated in the Moquegua region. This permit has begun to generate discomfort in some peasant communities that are opposed to this commercial operation..

In this regard, the minister of this portfolio, Alessandra Herrera, indicated from Arequipa that prior to the authorization, there was a work of socialization and approval of social and environmental instruments. “There were talks and trainings where experiences could be shared and information could be given, so that people do not have a wrong idea of the impact of mining activity,” he replied during his presence at the 35th edition of the perumin.

The authority emphasized that the approval of the instruments and the final authorization not only passed through the Ministry of Energy and Mines, but also involved the Ministries of Environment and Agrarian Development and Irrigation. “When there is the development of a mining activity, it is cross-sectoral,” he added.

Regarding pending mining projects in the country, Herrera indicated that proposals and policies presented by ministers from various portfolios are permanently evaluated in a session of the council of ministers; but that the current global context prevents the development of many.

“We are in a complex world context in which we could not develop the number of projects as we would like. When we talk about the operation of a project, it means that behind a mine there are many years of exploration and there are a series of approved instruments. What Government we seek the approval of those who comply with the corresponding social and environmental instruments”, he concluded.
