The Hotel Chamber and the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Puno are considering filing legal action against Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú. They question the temporary closure of the Juliaca airport.
Andean Airports of Peru scheduled the temporary closure of the Juliaca airport from May 22 to 29, however, they would not have carried out the maintenance work on the runway, which is why they ordered the extension of the closure until June 5.
The new president of the Hotel Chamber of Puno, Oswaldo Soto Guzmán, estimated that the daily economic losses due to the closure of the Juliaca air terminal, are approximately half a million soles. I consider that the tourist destination of Puno is increasingly relegated.
“A few days ago we went to the Juliaca airport to find out the progress of the repair work on the runway, however, we were informed that probably the expansion of the closure of the air terminal lasts for about 10 more days“, he claimed.
Soto added that the closure of the airport implies being cut off and isolated due to lack of air service in the Puno region. “There are even serious patients who need to be transferred by air to hospitals in Lima.”.
For his part, the president of the Puno Chamber of Commerce and Production, Francisco Aquise, said that this situation is worrying, since the closure of the airport seriously affects businessmen. Even more so in this period of economic reactivation after the Covid-19 pandemic.
The representatives of these unions will analyze the Juliaca airport concession contracts to determine responsibilities for the delay in the works.
