This Thursday, Fernando Muslera announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team. The 37-year-old goalkeeper played 133 matches with the Celeste shirt and was a starter in winning the Copa América in 2011 in Argentina.
The continental competition was his main moment with the Uruguayan team. The goalkeeper was a starter throughout the tournament. In the quarter-finals, he saved a Carlos Tévez penalty that eliminated Argentina on penalties.
On social media, the official profile of the Uruguayan team paid tribute to the athlete.

Muslera was also called up to play in four World Cups with Uruguay, being a starter in the 2010 editions, in South Africa (when he finished in 4th place), 2014, in Brazil, and 2018, in Russia.
In 2022, in the Qatar edition, Muslera was a substitute for Rochet, Internacional’s goalkeeper.
His last World Cup match was against France, in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup. On that occasion, Uruguay lost 2-0 and was eliminated. Muslera even missed the French’s second goal, scored by Griezmann.
The goalkeeper continues to play for Galatasaray, in Turkey, where he has played 503 games since 2011 and has been champion of the Turkish Championship six times. Muslera also has spells with Lazio, in Italy, Wanderers and Nacional, both in Uruguay.
