Out for the rest of the season, Enzo Fernández receives harsh criticism from former Premier League player

Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, from Chelsea, received strong criticism from former Tottenham and England player Darren Bent this Thursday, during the podcast talkSport in which I was commenting on Chelsea’s 5-0 defeat last Tuesday (23).

“He cost more than 100 million, he won a World Cup, but (…) his decision-making is horrible. I need someone to tell me what he does well. He doesn’t hold the ball well, he doesn’t give assists. He did shameful things in the last game.” Said the former player during the podcast.

The 23-year-old player arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 for the then-Premier League record fee of 120 million Euros (approximately R$664.5 million at current prices) and since then it has taken him a while to establish himself. This season, the midfielder has been a starter, partnering with the current record signing, Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo, but has not been able to find consistency, with Chelsea currently occupying 9th place in the championship.

He had already received criticism and countered it by saying he was having difficulty adapting to the Premier League and resuming his football at the 2022 World Cup, where he was voted best young player of the tournament. His coach, fellow Argentine Maurício Pochettino, has also responded to criticism of Enzo, saying that “his best days are yet to come.”

The midfielder had an inguinal hernia in recent months. Having even played with groin pain during the season, he must undergo surgery this Thursday to be in good shape for the Copa América, which takes place in the middle of the year. This means Enzo is unlikely to play in Chelsea’s final six Premier League games.
