The new 14 iPhones will hit stores next Friday. However, we managed to get one of the models, namely the powerful iPhone 14 Pro Max, even before the premiere. We talk about the first impressions of this device in the latest episode of the TOPtech series:

One of the most interesting new features in the iPhone 14 Pro is Dynamic Island and Always On Display. What is hidden under these slogans? We explain.

Dynamic Island

In the case of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple resigned from the so-called notch, or indentations in the upper edge of the screen, which have accompanied these devices since the premiere of the iPhone X. Now the notch has been replaced by an area that Apple dubbed – Dynamic Island.

The dynamic island hides the lens of the front True Depth camera and several other sensors. To mask its presence, Apple has cleverly integrated this area with the notification system and the applications themselves.

Example? When I touch this area while playing music, I will be automatically taken to the Music application. In turn, when I hold my finger on the “tablet” longer, it will change to the music control widget.

Example number two: I start the clock application and start the timer. After exiting to the home screen, a small widget will appear on the Dynamic Island area, counting down the remaining time. What happens if I start listening to music again? Then the dynamic island will split into two elements – the one on the left will allow me to control the music, and the one on the right – the timer.

Example number three: When I launch an application that requires FaceID authentication, or when I start paying with Apple Pay, the dynamic island will turn into a small authentication box.

This area is also used, among others when locking and unlocking the device, and when turning silent mode on and off. These are small but satisfying details. Apple shows again that it has no equal in tweaking software amenities.

A dynamic island comes in various sizes and shapes, depending on the function or application we use. Importantly, the successor to notch works not only with native Apple applications, but also with third-party apps, such as Spotify, YouTube Music or WhatsApp.

This new solution, like notch, also has its dark side. When playing a movie in full screen mode, this area obscures part of the displayed image, which can be irritating. So Apple has not eliminated the biggest problem related to the note. He just cleverly hid it.

Always On Display

The ProMotion screen used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offers variable refresh rate ranging from 120 Hz to just 1 Hz. This, in turn, allowed Apple to introduce a novelty that many people have been waiting for a long time.

I am talking about Always On Display, i.e. a screen that never fades away. When we press the device lock button, our eyes will no longer see black nothingness, but a neat and functional AoD screen.

This is where the difference between AoD screens known from Android smartphones and the solution proposed by Apple becomes apparent. In the first case, the AoD function was usually limited to the clock and notification icons

Apple, in turn, offers a full-fledged and only heavily dimmed lock screen – with wallpaper, application widgets and notifications. Of course, the AoD screen can be fully personalized.

My only doubt is how this solution will translate into battery life on a single smartphone charge. I will definitely look at this issue when testing the device.
