The 2023 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Kazan have been rescheduled from Russia. This was reported on the website of the organizers.
The leadership stated that they could not ensure the effectiveness of the Games in Kazan and the safety of athletes and society. “This cancellation is devastating for us, for our athletes in Ukraine, in Russia and around the world, who have been preparing for the competition for years,” the organizers said. They thanked the Russian side for preparing for the Games.
Special Olympics is for athletes with mental disabilities. The competition was to be held in Kazan from 21 to 27 January 2023. Two thousand athletes were going to take part in it.
On February 28, the International Olympic Committee called for the non-admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions. The decision was made against the backdrop of a special Russian military operation in the Donbass.
