DTEK: Ukraine energy integration will boost EU security

The integration of Ukraine into the European Union energy market will strengthen Europe's overall energy security by providing new power capacity, infrastructure and crisis-tested grid expertise, according to Ukrainian energy company DTEK.

In an opinion column, DTEK Strategy Director Ivan Helyukh said that energy supply reliability can no longer be treated as an exclusively national issue. He noted that while Ukraine imports electricity from European partners during local power deficits, its grid is also capable of supporting neighboring countries when those nations face generation constraints.

Ukraine formally became part of the European power system following synchronization with the continental grid in 2022. State transmission system operator Ukrenergo subsequently achieved full membership in ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, at the end of 2023. Helyukh stated that the next step must focus on deepening integration through joint markets, investment attraction and shared strategic planning.

Grid Flexibility and Storage Projects

To increase the flexibility of the energy system, DTEK is actively developing energy storage systems, digital networks and renewable power generation. In partnership with American company Fluence, DTEK commissioned six energy storage systems with a total capacity of 200 megawatts. The company is also constructing a digital substation and continuing work on a 500-megawatt wind power plant.

Helyukh highlighted that Ukrainian energy workers have gained practical experience operating under continuous pressure in recent years, mastering rapid system adaptation, problem localization and swift power restoration. He emphasized that the broader goal of energy integration is not simply Ukraine joining the European market, but enhancing European energy security using solutions already implemented in Ukraine.

His comments follow earlier statements from DTEK Chief Executive Officer Maksym Timchenko, who said that investments in Ukraine currently represent direct investments in European energy security. DTEK operates as Ukraine's largest private energy company, managing power generation and grid projects across the country.
