SpaceX plans to increase the computing power of its data centers by more than five times by the end of 2027, company chief Elon Musk announced during a second quarter 2026 earnings report.
The company currently operates infrastructure with a capacity of about 1.4 gigawatts, but aims to reach closer to 10 gigawatts under the new target. All new computing capacity will be built on Nvidia accelerators, including the upcoming Vera Rubin platform that Musk described as the best available architecture.
According to SpaceX documents, the current and planned Colossus infrastructure includes roughly 100,000 Nvidia H100, 110,000 GB200, and 110,000 GB300 accelerators, alongside at least 220,000 additional planned GB300 units. If the expanded power target is built entirely on Vera Rubin accelerators, the total number of graphics processing units could exceed 2 million, although SpaceX has not specified how much of the cluster will use that architecture.

Colossus Infrastructure and AI Financials
The expansion follows the growth of SpaceX's artificial intelligence division after its stock-based merger with xAI in February 2026. The transaction valued SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, creating a combined entity valued at $1.25 trillion.
During the second quarter of 2026, the SpaceX artificial intelligence division, which encompasses xAI and X, generated $2.56 billion in revenue alongside an operating loss of $1.26 billion. Revenue growth was primarily driven by compute rental contracts for the Colossus infrastructure, including approximately $1.52 billion from a single unnamed client, rather than sales of Grok.
Market Competition and Orbital Plans
Other major artificial intelligence developers are also scaling their computing infrastructure. Anthropic utilizes AWS Trainium, Nvidia accelerators, and Google TPU hardware for its Claude models, while OpenAI has announced plans to deploy capacities from AMD, Nvidia, and AWS Trainium.
Against this competitive backdrop, SpaceX is building its own large scale infrastructure to train and operate artificial intelligence models. Musk has previously stated long term plans to deploy data centers into orbit.
