NASA confirmed on Wednesday that an upper stage of a SpaceX rocket crashed into the lunar surface in an unplanned collision.
In a video published on the social network X, NASA classified the crash as a safe event that poses no risk to Earth or to missions currently operating on the Moon.
Mission background
The rocket upper stage originated from a launch conducted in 2025 that placed the Blue Ghost One landing module into orbit. Firefly Aerospace, an American company, built the lander as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.
