Chelsea made it four consecutive victories in the English Championship by beating Brighton 2-1 this Wednesday, in a postponed game from the 34th round, a result that increases the London team’s chances of competing in one of the European cups next season.
Chelsea got the three points thanks to goals from Cole Palmer (34′) and Christopher Nkunku (64′), while Brighton scored in stoppage time with Danny Welbeck (90’+7).
Nkunku, recovered from injury, came on at half-time to replace Myjailo Mudryk, also injured. It was the French striker’s third goal of the season, on the eve of Didier Deschamps announcing his call-up for Euro 2024.
Chelsea suffered in the last moments of the match with the expulsion of their captain Reece James (88′) and then with Welbeck’s goal in stoppage time, but resisted attempts in the final moments by Brighton (10th), who suffered their fifth defeat in the last nine games.
In the last round, Chelsea will face Bournemouth on Sunday, still with chances, although remote, of reaching Tottenham (5th), which occupies the position that leads to a place in the Europa League.
On the other hand, Chelsea are practically guaranteed sixth place in the Premier League, which leads to the Conference League.
In this scenario, the Europa League is not yet ruled out, as Chelsea would get a place if Manchester City defeat Manchester United in the FA Cup final, on May 25th.
In the other game played this Wednesday, Newcastle (7th), now three points behind Chelsea, was the big loser of the night, after the 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford to Manchester United United (8th), which featured with young people to achieve triumph.
Kobbie Mainoo, 19 years old, opened the scoring in the first half and Amad Diallo (57′) and Rasmus Hojlund (84′), both 21 years old, sealed the victory in the final stage.
Anthony Gordon had provisionally equalized for Newcastle shortly after half-time (49′) and Lewis Hall added the second in stoppage time (90’+2).
