An iPhone 17 Pro in a Rhinoshield case survived a 30,607-meter drop from the stratosphere at Esrange Space Center in Sweden.

The feat earned protective accessory manufacturer Rhinoshield a spot in Guinness World Records for the highest drop of a mobile phone in a case onto natural terrain.

The test took place on June 24, 2026, at the space facility in northern Sweden. A high-altitude balloon lifted the Apple smartphone into the stratosphere, where it captured video against the backdrop of Earth before being remotely detached to begin a free fall.

During the flight, the phone relied entirely on the AirX case without any secondary protective housing or heating systems. The accessory endured extreme atmospheric conditions, including temperatures between -40 and -60 degrees Celsius and air pressure equal to roughly one percent of sea-level normal.

Stratospheric descent and wilderness recovery

The drop was conducted in partnership with British aerospace company Sent Into Space, which outfitted the payload with a GPS tracker, monitoring systems, and a remote release mechanism. Free fall and descent lasted approximately 25 minutes before the device struck the ground.

Locating the smartphone in the remote Swedish wilderness proved to be one of the most challenging aspects of the experiment. After searchers tracked the device using its GPS signal, representatives from Guinness World Records verified video recordings, witness statements, and the physical condition of the phone.

Inspectors confirmed that the iPhone 17 Pro remained fully functional, successfully powering on, placing calls, and taking photographs without sustaining any body damage.

Protective technology and materials

Rhinoshield attributed the survival of the phone to its AirX multi-layer protection system. The case combines air cushioning, an elastic inner structure, and pressure relief chambers designed to dissipate impact energy and reduce internal damage risks.

Unlike standard protective cases constructed from multiple plastics or rubber components, the AirX model features a single-material construction.
