Russian television presenter Elena Letuchaya faces a lawsuit at the Moscow Arbitration Court from dental clinic Spasibo.Klinik following a controversial episode of her consumer inspection program Novy Revizorro.
The legal action was filed against both Letuchaya and former patient Elena Svetlova, according to records from the corporate registry service Rusprofile reviewed by Lenta.ru. Court filings indicate that the statement of claim has not yet been formally accepted for proceedings by the court.
Elena Letuchaya is a prominent Russian television journalist best known for hosting investigative consumer rights shows that inspect service standards and commercial practices. Novy Revizorro is a popular television program where presenters conduct surprise visits to businesses, restaurants, and medical facilities to evaluate their operations.
Filming dispute at Moscow clinic
The legal claim stems from an episode filmed at Spasibo.Klinik, in which Svetlova publicly accused chief physician Alexey Frolov of providing substandard treatment that caused severe medical complications. Svetlova, whose doctor holds a candidate of medical sciences degree, claimed that after a year of painful and expensive procedures, Frolov refused to continue her care.
Svetlova subsequently secured the initiation of a criminal investigation into her medical treatment. However, an official medical expert evaluation later concluded that the care provided by Frolov and his clinic was of high quality.
During recording, Letuchaya attempted to question Frolov about the allegations, but the physician declined to speak with her. Frolov described the presenter as a hype seeker who was incompetent in medical and dental matters, and he refused to discuss details of Svetlova's treatment by citing doctor-patient confidentiality. Dentist Alexander Baburov, who was familiar with the dispute, later described the conflict as ambiguous.
Claims of extortion and industry reaction
Frolov later addressed the controversy on Instagram, stating that Svetlova had spent more than three years attempting to illegally obtain 10 million rubles from the clinic. He stated that she attempted to exert pressure on the facility through media outlets and Russia's Investigative Committee, the chief federal agency responsible for investigating serious crimes. Public reaction largely supported the dentist following his statement.
The dispute triggered broader concern among medical professionals over patient extremism, a term doctors use for aggressive legal and public pressure that has prompted some healthcare workers to leave the profession. On August 18, the National Association of Healthcare Managers issued an official statement demanding a workplace inspection of the program. The association called for the episode to be pulled from broadcast, an official retraction to be published, and a public apology to be issued to Frolov and clinic staff.
Separate financial troubles for presenter
The lawsuit arrives alongside separate financial and legal difficulties for the television presenter. Russia's Federal Tax Service is currently liquidating Letuchaya i KO, a company founded by Letuchaya in 2017. Tax authorities previously identified an unpaid tax debt of 1.7 million rubles owed by the presenter.
