Russian air force officer killed in St Petersburg car bomb

A Russian lieutenant colonel was killed and his wife injured when an explosive device detonated under their car in Saint Petersburg on August 27.

The high-ranking officer, who served in the Russian Air Force and Air Defence Forces, died instantly in the blast on Kolpinskoye Highway in the city's Slavyanka microdistrict. News outlet Fontanka.ru reported that his wife was rushed to an intensive care unit after the vehicle exploded around 10:00 am as the couple was driving away from their home near a Magnit store at Kolpinskoye Highway 18.

Witnesses told Fontanka.ru that the epicenter of the explosion occurred on the driver's side of the car, leaving the driver's door severely distorted outward. The outlet reported that both the officer and his wife had their legs severed by the improvised explosive device, although the Telegram news channel Ostorozhno Novosti noted that official authorities had not released detailed statements regarding the victims' condition.

The Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case following the explosion. Regional officials from the committee confirmed that the identities of the victims had been established and stated that forensic examinations would be conducted. Firefighters, medical crews, and bomb disposal technicians cordoned off the site, preventing bystanders from approaching while experts inspected the wreckage. Local television channel 78.ru reported that flying shrapnel damaged neighboring vehicles and noted claims that a faulty gas cylinder could have caused the blast.

Military housing district

The explosion took place in Slavyanka, a microdistrict constructed in the 2010s where the Russian Ministry of Defence purchased residential properties in bulk for contract military personnel and retiring servicemen. According to Ostorozhno Novosti, housing in the development was primarily allocated to mid-level and senior commanders, including captains, majors, lieutenant colonels, and colonels, as well as warrant officers and sergeants.

Prior surveillance in Moscow

The incident in Saint Petersburg follows a recent arrest in Moscow, where Russian authorities detained a young woman accused of involvement in preparing a separate terrorist attack. Officials said she spent three months conducting surveillance on a serviceman prior to her apprehension.

Saint Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city and a major administrative and industrial hub in the country's northwestern region. The Air Force and Air Defence Forces form a major component of the Russian Aerospace Forces, overseeing military aviation and missile defence networks, while the Investigative Committee handles major criminal investigations across the Russian Federation.
