Protests in the United States after the murder of an African American at the hands of five police officers

The authorities of Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, have made public the video that shows the beating that caused the death of Tire Nichols, a young man of 29 years, on January 10. The police officers have been fired and prosecuted for the crime of murder.

The video, made public by the Memphis Police, shows five officers, also African-Americans, beating the young man with a baton Y electrocuting him with a taser after stopping him for an alleged traffic violation.

The five agents have been prosecuted by a murder crime. Tire Nichols died three days after the beating at a Memphis hospital from injuries sustained by officers.

The cities of Memphis, Chicago, Boston, whasington either NY, among others, they have been the scene of protests in recent hours and several more demonstrations are expected to be held throughout the United States throughout this weekend.

In Chicago, the protesters have taken to the streets despite being in sub-zero temperatures and shouting “the murderous cops must go” and in New York, the protesters have gone to Union Square, Grand Central as well as the plaza Times Square, where the protests have been most violent. Protesters have hit several police vehicles and several arrests have been made. And in Whasington, protesters have gathered in front of the White House.

For his part, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, has expressed being “deeply hurt” after seeing the video: “I was outraged and deeply hurt to see the horrible video of the beating that caused the death of Nichols,” the president said. Biden called Nichols’ parents Friday to offer his condolences.

The process against the five police officers occurs in the midst of the social debate on police violence against black people, particularly since the murder at the hands of police officers from George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, after which the protest movement known as ‘Black Lives Matter‘.

The US police have been singled out by human rights organizations for use violence disproportionately towards the black population in the country.

Nearly a third of all people killed by police in the US in 2021 were African-Americans, despite being only 13% of the country’s population, according to the organization Mapping Police Violence.
