Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Civil Protection Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center on Sunday morning, where he said the deaths of a Greek coordinator and a Danish operator while fighting the large Porto Germeno wildfire had filled everyone with grief.
Mitsotakis was accompanied by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou. He was briefed on wildfires burning across the country, with particular focus on the Porto Germeno fire.
Officials said strong winds in the area continued to hamper aerial operations. Fixed-wing aircraft were unable to make water drops because of turbulence, leaving helicopters as the only aircraft still operating. Increased ground forces have been deployed, and Special Forest Operations Units have pushed into difficult terrain.
Following the briefing, officials discussed anti-erosion works to begin immediately in affected areas, along with state damage assessment procedures.
