French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has confirmed he will not be a candidate in the country's 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview published Saturday by French newspaper Le Parisien, Lecornu added that he would not involve himself in the campaign for the upcoming election next spring.

Celui qui dit "ne pas se mêler" de la campagne présidentielle assure: "Ma priorité, c’est de m’opposer au désordre et de donner un budget à la France."

Asked to confirm if he would stand in 2027, Lecornu said he did not know in what language he needed to state it. He explained that his administration is a governing mission rather than a campaign team, reiterating that he is not a candidate for the presidency and will not interfere in the campaign.

Lecornu also promised that his government would not raise taxes, according to news agency AFP. He stressed his intention to secure the passage of a national budget this autumn.

Agricultural Relief Plans

Addressing economic difficulties facing farmers, Lecornu promised a support and rescue plan to help the agricultural sector get through the winter following a summer marked by drought.

The Prime Minister declared agriculture to be his top priority for the start of the autumn term, adding that the government needed to act quickly. He also promised a broader recovery plan for the agricultural industry targeted for 2027.

Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has already initiated consultations with industry representatives. Lecornu stated that he will work alongside her to develop tailor-made measures, which will be incorporated into the 2027 budget.

Government Role and Budget Context

Lecornu serves as Prime Minister of France, heading the government under the executive authority of the French republic. The country holds presidential elections every five years to choose its head of state.

French parliamentary procedure requires the government to present its budget proposals each autumn. These proposals outline public spending, economic policy, and tax regulations for the upcoming fiscal year.

Le Parisien is a major regional daily newspaper based in Paris, while Agence France-Presse, known as AFP, is the national news agency of France.
