About 100 people were killed as a result of airstrikes inflicted by the Myanmar military on a village in the Sikain region in the north of the country. It is reported by TASS with reference to the Associated Press.

According to sources of the agency, the blows were delivered to the participants of the ceremony, organized by opponents of the authorities. According to the agency, among the dead are many children.

Initial reports put the death toll at around 50, but later estimates released by anti-government media put the number at around 100, the AP notes. According to eyewitnesses interviewed by the agency, the plane dropped bombs on a crowd of people who had gathered in the morning for the opening of the local office of the opposition movement.

Foreign and opposition media periodically report that the Myanmar authorities use aerial bombs against the population. For example, the Irrawaddy reported that since the beginning of this year, the military has stepped up air strikes on both civilian and resistance targets in the Sikain region, as well as in the states of Karen, Kachin and Chin. The escalation came after ethnic armed groups vowed in their New Year’s speeches to overthrow the military in 2023.

In February 2021, based on an article in the constitution that makes Myanmar’s army its main guarantor, the military removed the civilian government. They announced massive fraud in favor of the National League for Democracy in the November 2020 parliamentary elections. The leader of this party, Aung San Suu Kyi, was placed under house arrest and subsequently faced a number of charges. In total, she was sentenced to 33 years in prison.
