Wagenknecht: Ukraine Deal Must Address Russia's Security

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the German party Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, said resolving the conflict in Ukraine requires accounting for the security interests of all parties, including Russia. She made the comments in an article for the newspaper Ostdeutsche Allgemeine.

Wagenknecht said diplomatic approaches to the conflict should not, as they have so far, focus solely on Ukraine's position. She said the conflict's background should also be considered, along with unresolved questions tied to Europe's security architecture.

Bucharest summit cited as trigger

Wagenknecht said one of the main factors behind the Ukrainian crisis was the decisions made at the 2008 NATO Bucharest summit regarding Kyiv's membership in the alliance. She said anyone who wants to end the war permanently must take these connections into account.

Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, has previously said Western policy toward Ukraine was oriented from the start toward military confrontation with Russia rather than a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
