Fire Kills 1,000 Animals at Megara Farm in Greece

A large wildfire that swept through the Attica-Boeotia region in Greece destroyed a livestock farm in the Katsikali area of Megara, according to initial reports.

About 1,000 animals and birds were unable to be saved, dealing a massive blow to the farm's livestock.

Animals killed

Counts so far have found 21 dead sows along with their piglets, one farmed wild boar and three lambs. The fate of about 15 sheep remains unknown.

Bird losses even higher

Losses among the farm's birds were even greater. About 500 guinea fowl were killed in the fire, along with 180 roosters just one month old.

The toll also includes about 300 other birds and 30 geese that did not survive the fire.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage, as the full count has not yet been completed. The losses are already being described as extremely severe for the farm.
