This Wednesday, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Roberto Sánchez reported that the capacity was expanded to receive more visitors in the llaqta of Machu Picchu.
It is worth emphasizing that in the last hours it transpired that Machu Picchu had reached its maximum capacity to receive travelers, but after a meeting with Executive officials, the capacity was extended to 5,044 people per day.
“In coordination with the Ministry of Culture and after the decision made in session in an extraordinary way, for high season it was agreed to increase the capacity to 5,044 visitors per day to the llaqta of Machu Picchu,” he specified on Twitter.
However, from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos) of UNESCO They recommended that the government not give in to pressure from some unions to increase capacity, since they lack technical support and the sustainable development of the world wonder is at risk, and they recalled that conservation should prevail over tourist demand.
