The Minister of Agriculture, Andres Alencastre, estimated that the third call for the international supplier of urea would be launched between June 28 and 29 after the previous process was annulled due to alleged irregularities found by the Comptroller of the Republic. However, to date, the contract with the Brazilian firm MF Fertilizers, which won the good bid to supply the 73,529 tons of fertilizer, remains in force. In addition, there are conflicting positions between the minister and members of Agro Rural.
Clímaco Cárdenas, president of the National Convention of Peruvian Agro (Conveagro), estimates that the uncertainty surrounding the purchase of urea has so far affected around 14% of the sowings of the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign.
“The organizations have estimated an affectation of 14% of the planting campaign based on the reports that are available,” he told La República.
In addition, he added that the arrival of the fertilizer out of time would multiply this impact “by 2 or 3” times more.
According to the union representative, the main crops that have seen their planting decrease are corn, potatoes and rice, especially in the regions of San Martín, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Lima Provinces, Ica, Moquegua, among others. others.
“We hope that in the month of August at the latest it will be the distribution; for that, political decision is needed”, he specified.
On this point, Minister Alencastre estimated on Thursday from Ancash that the fertilizer would arrive in the country during the second week of next month.
Complaint for irregularities
After the revelation of alleged illicit acts in the choice of the urea supplier, the Midagri issued a statement in which it requests the Attorney General’s Office to formulate complaints before the Public Ministry against the responsible officials, who participated in the call for the purchase of the fertilizer. .
