USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Praised by CENTCOM Commander

Admiral Brad Cooper praised crew resilience on the USS Abraham Lincoln following reports of deteriorating living conditions during its Middle East deployment.

USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Praised by CENTCOM Commander

The commander of United States Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, said on Sunday that his recent visit to the USS Abraham Lincoln inspired awe and praised the fortitude of the crew, following reports of mental health concerns and deteriorating living conditions aboard the aircraft carrier.

Cooper said he wished every American could see the crew in action, adding that citizens would feel immense pride in their camaraderie, teamwork, and resilience.

The warship has been at sea for more than 200 days, marking a record deployment length according to Congressional Democrats. Lawmakers are demanding answers after families of service members raised concerns over worsening living conditions aboard the vessel. Reports from relatives and observers described severe strain aboard the ship, including cases of sailors in despair, mold, rationed food, and extended periods of nearly nine months away from land.

Mental Health Data and Crew Strain

Cooper wrote in a social media statement on Sunday that the USS Abraham Lincoln recorded the lowest number of mental health cases among the 11 active aircraft carriers in the United States Navy.

However, Cooper acknowledged that low case numbers do not mean everything is perfect on board. He stated that any of the nearly four million Navy veterans in the United States would confirm that long periods of service at sea are not suited for everyone.

Calling sea duty a uniquely demanding experience, Cooper noted that every individual, including himself, reacts differently to stress factors. He praised the leadership aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln for prioritizing crew mental health and endurance.

Deployment Timeline and Washington Response

The aircraft carrier departed San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, for a planned mission in the South China Sea. Military commanders later redirected the vessel to the Middle East prior to the launch of military operations against Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28. About 5,000 sailors and Marines are currently deployed aboard the warship.

Senior officials in Washington have pushed back against criticism regarding conditions on the ship. United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said last week that reports detailing poor conditions on the warship completely distorted the situation. President Donald Trump also dismissed concerns on Friday about the extended length of the deployment, stating that the duration was not long enough.

Military Overview and Operational Context

The USS Abraham Lincoln is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier operated by the United States Navy, capable of carrying thousands of personnel and multi-role combat aircraft. United States Central Command, based in Tampa, Florida, oversees military operations across the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. Long deployments in high-stress operational theaters regularly test military logistics and crew endurance during extended maritime missions.
