Ukrainian forces have set a new altitude record for the Sting interceptor drone after shooting down a Russian reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle at a height of 7,472 metres. The record strike was executed by the Klever crew from the 27th Separate Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine, according to a report by Defender Media.
The successful interception broke a previous height record recorded earlier in August. During that engagement, an operator from the Alpha Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine destroyed a Russian aerial target at an altitude of 6,955 metres. An earlier interception at 6,858 metres was completed by Ukrainian border guards.
In those earlier engagements, the targeted aircraft were identified as Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance drones. Ukrainian operators have routinely used the Sting interceptor in recent months to engage Russian reconnaissance drones operating at altitudes between six and seven kilometres.
Scale of Drone Interceptions
Since the beginning of the year, Sting drones and other interceptor platforms have destroyed more than 11,000 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles across the front lines. The destroyed targets include Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones, Russian Geran loitering munitions, and Gerber drones.
Data from July indicates that the Sting accounted for more than 41 percent of all Shahed and Geran drones destroyed by interceptor systems during that month. The interceptor also destroyed 38 percent of targeted Gerber drones in July.
The Sting is a specialized Ukrainian-developed first-person view interceptor drone designed specifically to counter enemy reconnaissance craft and loitering munitions. Utilizing small interceptor drones allows military units to destroy high-altitude surveillance aircraft efficiently, preserving expensive conventional surface-to-air missile systems for larger threats.
Countering Russian Aerial Surveillance
Russian forces regularly deploy reconnaissance drones like the ZALA Z-20, manufactured by Russia's ZALA Aero Group, to gather intelligence, track troop movements, and direct artillery fire onto Ukrainian positions. High-altitude interceptors disrupt these surveillance flights before targets can be located.
