Ukrainian forces repelled nearly 200 Russian attacks across multiple frontlines on Sunday, with the heaviest combat centered around the strategic city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk oblast.
According to an evening operational update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, military commanders recorded 196 combat engagements along active battlefronts from the start of the day.
The highest intensity of fighting occurred in the Kostiantynivka sector, where Ukrainian defense forces turned back 22 Russian assaults. These defensive engagements took place around Kostiantynivka, Illinivka, Toretske, and Sofiivka, as well as along tactical directions toward the settlements of Stepanivka, Pavlivka, and Vilne.
Kostiantynivka holds major strategic importance in eastern Ukraine as the southernmost city of the fortress belt within the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban agglomeration. This industrial area in Donetsk oblast remains under Ukrainian government control. Local reporting project Donbas Realities previously noted that a Russian occupation of Kostiantynivka could sharply worsen defensive conditions for the remaining chain of fortress belt cities connected by the H-20 highway.
Widespread Offensive Operations
In the Pokrovsk sector, Ukrainian troops repelled 14 Russian attacks as enemy forces attempted to push toward Bilytske, Novyi Donbas, Svitle, Serhiivka, and Novopavlivka. Russian units also launched offensive actions in the areas of Dorozhnye and Udachne.
Along the Lyman sector, the General Staff reported 12 attempts by Russian forces to advance, with four of those attacks remaining ongoing at the time of the evening report.
Active combat continued across several other operational areas, including the Pivnichno-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk sectors, the Pivdenno-Slobozhanskyi sector, and the Kupiansk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Huliaipole, and Orikhiv directions. By contrast, the General Staff reported that Russian forces conducted no offensive actions in either the Oleksandrivskyi or Prydniprovskyi sectors.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine serves as the central executive military body overseeing defense strategy and operational control across all active war zones in the country.
Frontline Movement and Infiltration
The latest engagements follow earlier territorial changes along southern and eastern battlefronts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on August 12 that Ukrainian troops had recaptured 26 settlements across Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts since January as part of an offensive operation in the Oleksandrivskyi sector, liberating a total of 745 square kilometers.
Independent assessments by the Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in the United States, highlighted recent shifts on other sectors of the front. In an analysis published on August 19, ISW analysts reported that Ukrainian forces recently advanced in northern Kharkiv oblast, while Russian troops made recent progress in the Kupiansk sector.
Regarding the Kostiantynivka sector, ISW noted that Russian forces continue to execute infiltration missions using small groups in and near Kostiantynivka. Analysts explained that these tactics aim to bypass Ukrainian frontline defensive positions and disrupt military logistics routes.
Geolocated video footage published on August 18 showed Ukrainian forces shelling Russian positions in southwestern Kostiantynivka and northeastern Osykovo, northwest of Kostiantynivka, following what ISW assessed was a small-scale Russian infiltration operation.
