Misleading Advertising: US Warns Businesses About False Complimentary Customer Reviews

The US trade regulator has warned hundreds of companies, from Amazon to Google, about falsifying glowing customer reviews, amid a vigorous campaign against misleading advertising that is rampant on the internet.

The Federal Trade Commission The FTC has sent notices to about 700 companies, which could be fined if they violate the rules on online criticism.

An industry has emerged to help businesses polish their online image, including some services that use false reviews or unscrupulous techniques to remove negative reviews.

“The rise of social networks has blurred the line that separates authentic content from advertising, which led to an explosion of misleading criticism, “the federal agency said in a statement.

The FTC noted that it targets large companies and advertisers, but specifies that receiving a notice does not “in any way suggest” poor performance.

Fines can reach $ 43,792 per violation.

“False comments and other misleading advertisements mislead the customer and undermine honest businesses,” said Samuel Levine, director of the agency’s consumer protection office.

Large firms such as Coca-Cola, the toy maker Mattel, Kellogg’s cereals or Airbnb and the Expedia page, are among the companies warned.
