Portugal registered an average of 500 electric and hybrid cars a day in the first seven months of 2026, according to figures released by the Associação Automóvel de Portugal (ACAP), the Portuguese Automobile Association.
ACAP's monthly report on new vehicle registrations showed that sales of electrified vehicles rose more than 54% in July compared with the same month in 2025, with 5,603 more light passenger vehicles registered.
From January to July 2026, registrations of electric and hybrid light passenger vehicles totaled 106,288 units, ACAP said, a rise of 30.4% compared with the same period of 2025.
Tesla tops the brand rankings
Tesla led the ranking of electric vehicle brands over the first seven months of the year, with 6,364 cars sold, a growth of more than 45% compared with the same period last year. BMW came second and BYD third in the brand table.
ACAP also highlighted strong growth for Mazda, whose electric vehicle sales rose from six units in the same period last year to 200 units this year, and for Leapmotor, which went from 63 units sold to 775.
Fully electric registrations up 40.7%
Looking only at fully electric new light passenger vehicles, registrations rose 40.7% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, with 40,309 units registered, ACAP said.
Overall car market and heavy vehicles
Across the whole automobile market, sales grew 10.2% through July compared with the same period last year, with 180,423 more new vehicles put into circulation. ACAP said around 75% of newly registered light passenger vehicles ran on alternative energy sources, with electric and hybrid models standing out.
The heavy vehicle market also saw a significant rise, with sales up nearly 39% between January and July compared with the same period last year, according to ACAP.
