Belarusian chess player Badelko will change citizenship in order to play for the Russian team

Belarusian Olga Badelko will join the Russian national chess team. This was reported on the website of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF).

The 20-year-old athlete moved from the Belarusian federation to the Russian one in the fall of 2021. At the moment, Badelko is applying for Russian citizenship, which will allow her to play for the national team.

“I will be very happy to play for the Russian national team, this is one of the strongest teams in the world, which is very difficult to get into,” Badelko shared. She noted that the AIH’s earlier transition to the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) should bring new tournaments, including team ones.

Badelko is a multiple champion of Belarus in various age categories. She also has a victory at the European Championship among players under 16 years old.

Earlier it became known that the 12-time world chess champion Russian Alexandra Kosteniuk changed her sports citizenship to Swiss. As expected, Badelko will replace her in the Russian team.
