Fraudsters try to steal our PESEL numbers. Christmas warning

Sensitive personal data, such as an e-mail address, extracted or swindled by third parties can be used, for example, to take or borrow money. That’s why it’s so important not to share them with anyone. Unfortunately, scammers more and more often take advantage of the naivety of Poles, tempting with cheaper coal, an attractive offer on the phone, or claiming to be from a courier or extorting sensitive personal data.

Poles are becoming victims of scammers more and more often

The website ChronPESEL.pl conducted a study which shows that up to 27 percent. has recently received a phone call or e-mail asking for a PESEL number in order to settle some matter. The respondents aged 25-44 most often experienced this (30%). So the problem is common, but how to fight it?

– It is worth avoiding situations in which someone necessarily tries to obtain our personal data. In each such case, it is best to contact directly the company or institution with which the alleged representative we spoke. The mere fact that the interlocutor referred to our bank should not lower our vigilance – explains Bartłomiej Drozd, an expert of the ChronPESEL.pl website, a partner of the National Debt Register of the Economic Information Bureau.

Poles provide their personal data themselves

Unfortunately, sometimes scammers don’t even need to manipulate their victims because they hand them to them on a platter. According to the aforementioned survey, 1/3 of the respondents declared that they did not check whether information about us was passed on to other companies. Young Poles (aged 18-24) pay the least attention to it. 45 percent of them openly admit that they do not verify what will happen to their data after entrusting them to a specific company.

On the other hand, the vast majority – 87 percent – always check what data the companies or institutions with whom we sign a contract need.

Bartłomiej Drozd also emphasizes that you should not leave your identity documents “under collateral” when renting sports equipment, e.g. skis, and you should not agree to copy or leave it at the hotel or guesthouse reception.

The government wants to make it possible to reserve a PESEL number

It is likely that in the near future it will be more difficult to take a loan for stolen personal data. Prevention is better than cure – this was the assumption that the Minister of Digitization came up with when preparing the amendment to the Act on Population Records. The changes provide that it will be possible to reserve a PESEL number – both in the office and in the mObywatel application. A special register will be created for this.
