Léon Marchand has opened up about the daily demands of training under Bob Bowman, saying the American coach's uncompromising standards were central to the four gold medals he won at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Marchand, who hails from Toulouse and competes for Dauphins du Toec, moved to the United States to train with Bowman in August 2021. Bowman is the best-known coach in competitive swimming, a status earned largely through his work with Michael Phelps. A documentary recently released by L'Équipe Explore examined his methods in depth, drawing on testimony from Bowman himself and from the swimmers, men and women, who train in his programme.

What emerges from those accounts is a coach who will not let anything pass without comment. Marchand said Bowman responds at once when anything goes wrong in the pool, regardless of the reason. He described arriving at training on a Saturday morning after sleeping badly or spending Friday evening out, and finding himself struggling to perform at the required level. In those moments, he said with a laugh, his instinctive thought was simply that he wanted to be left alone.
Despite those testing sessions, Marchand said he was genuinely grateful for Bowman's guidance. He acknowledged freely that his coach had been a decisive factor behind his Paris medal haul. Standing at the Olympics with four gold medals in hand, he said, the natural response was to thank his coach.
Marchand picked up an adductor injury at the start of summer during the French championships. He has since announced that he expects to be fit to compete at the European Swimming Championships, which run in Paris from August 10 to 16. His programme has been reduced, however, and he may not enter his favoured event, the 400 metres individual medley.
