Russian Ka-29 helicopter flies Arctic ice reconnaissance

A Russian Ka-29 helicopter deployed from the patrol ship Ivan Papanin has carried out ice reconnaissance in the Arctic, the Northern Fleet said.

The aerial survey took place along the transit route of a naval warship detachment navigating the straits of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, state news agency TASS reported.

According to the Northern Fleet, the flight was conducted to determine the local ice situation and assess navigation safety for the warships traveling along the planned passage.

The Ivan Papanin is an icebreaking patrol ship built specifically for Russian naval operations in polar conditions. The vessel belongs to Project 23550, a class of multi-purpose warships designed to combine the functions of an icebreaker, a tug and an armed patrol boat. The ship features an aft landing pad and enclosed hangar that allow it to deploy military helicopters in sub-zero environments.

Navigating Arctic straits

The Kamov Ka-29 is a dedicated naval transport and combat helicopter known for its twin coaxial rotors, a signature design that does not require a tail rotor. Russian naval aviation uses the helicopter for transport, reconnaissance and naval infantry deployment, with its compact dimensions making it well suited to operations from ship decks.

Franz Josef Land is an uninhabited archipelago of nearly two hundred islands located deep within the Arctic circle, between the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. Vast fields of drifting sea ice and narrow channels make navigation hazardous for naval task groups, requiring constant aerial surveillance to identify safe passages through open water.

Arctic fleet exercises

The ice reconnaissance flight follows several other operational activities reported by Russian naval forces in the region.

Earlier, the Northern Fleet reported that it had carried out specialized exercises to rescue a distressed vessel in the Kara Sea, testing crew readiness in harsh weather.

Russian naval units also carried out exercises earlier in October aimed at unblocking a port in the Arctic.

The Northern Fleet, based on the Kola Peninsula, is responsible for defending Russia's northern waters and maintaining security along the Northern Sea Route, where freezing temperatures and shifting pack ice demand regular monitoring by shipborne aircraft.
