Ukrainian national parks on the banks of the Dnieper are under threat of turning into deserts due to the shallowing of the Kakhovka reservoir and the drop in the water level in the river, said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strelets.
According to RBC, Strelets noted that the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine “has already calculated the estimated losses for these territories, and they are colossal.” For the National Park “Veliky Meadow” – more than 15 billion hryvnia, [для парка] “Kamenskaya Sich” – more than 73 billion hryvnia,” the minister said.
It is expected that “the land area in these parks will increase by thousands of hectares, almost doubling”, which will increase the risk of droughts and extreme weather events, the minister added.
Recall that the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station collapsed on June 6. A number of cities and towns were almost completely flooded. An emergency regime has been introduced in the Kherson region.
