China withdrew from organizing the 2023 Asian Cup due to “exceptional circumstances caused by the covid-19 pandemic”, according to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) reported on Saturday.

The country, which is currently experiencing a new outbreak of coronavirus, has already canceled or postponed the organization of several sporting events on its territory, especially the Asian Games, scheduled for September in Hangzhou.

The Asian Cup, which brings together 24 teams, would be held in ten cities during the months of June and July 2023. The AFC has not yet announced the new host country.

China is facing its worst wave of the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic two years ago. Hoping to reduce the number of cases, the government adopted the “covid zero” strategy, which imposes isolation and quarantine as long as infections are recorded. For this reason, the 25 million inhabitants of Shanghai have been confined since April.

The country’s authorities also canceled the Diamond League athletics meetings scheduled for Shanghai (July 30) and Shenzhen (August 6), the Shanghai Formula 1 Grand Prix and the men’s (ATP) and women’s tennis tournaments ( WTA).
