Spain's average monthly pension reached 1,373.40 euros in August 2026, representing a 4.6 percent increase compared to the same month last year, according to official data published by Social Security.
The figures show significant geographic disparities across the country, with a gap of more than 500 euros per month separating the highest earning territories from those at the bottom of the scale.
The Basque Country recorded the highest average monthly pension among all autonomous communities, while Extremadura registered one of the lowest amounts in Spain.

Spain's state pension system is administered by Social Security, the central government agency responsible for managing social insurance benefits across the nation's 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities. Pensions are funded primarily through statutory payroll contributions made by active workers and employers.
Social Security spending and maximum pension levels
Total monthly expenditure by Social Security on pension payments has now reached 14,432 million euros across Spain. The highest individual pensions distributed under the state system exceed 3,000 euros per month.
The growth in total outlay comes alongside rising public concern regarding the long term sustainability of the system. Survey findings indicate that 70 percent of Spaniards believe young people will be the group most severely affected by pension challenges.
Highest regional pension averages recorded in August
Retirees in the Basque Country received an average monthly pension of 1,684.28 euros in August 2026, the highest figure recorded by any autonomous community. The region of Madrid registered the second highest average at 1,583.98 euros per month, followed by Asturias at 1,580 euros.
Several other autonomous communities recorded average monthly payouts above 1,400 euros. Aragon registered an average of 1,449.76 euros, Cantabria stood at 1,442.82 euros, and Catalonia reached 1,426.31 euros per month. Navarre remained close to this level with an average monthly pension of 1,566.92 euros.
Autonomous communities represent Spain's primary administrative and political divisions, established under the 1978 Constitution. Higher average pensions in regions like the Basque Country and Madrid reflect historically higher average wages and industrial activity, which generate higher contribution bases during working years.
Lowest regional averages and the 500-euro gap
At the opposite end of the ranking, Extremadura registered the lowest average monthly pension among Spain's autonomous communities at 1,173.79 euros. Galicia recorded 1,185.22 euros per month, Murcia reached 1,230.59 euros, and Andalusia stood at 1,237.65 euros.
The difference in average monthly pensions between the Basque Country and Extremadura amounts to 510.49 euros. Calculated across 12 monthly payments, this gap translates to an annual difference of more than 6,100 euros between retirees in the two territories.
Other autonomous communities recorded average figures below the national mean of 1,373.40 euros. The Canary Islands registered an average of 1,253.79 euros per month, the Balearic Islands reached 1,282.53 euros, and Castile-La Mancha recorded 1,290.83 euros. Castile and Leon stood at 1,376.28 euros per month, while La Rioja recorded 1,362.71 euros.
Regions in southern and western Spain, such as Extremadura and Andalusia, traditionally have larger agricultural and service sectors, which historically correspond to lower average contribution bases compared to the industrial north.
Provincial disparities within autonomous communities
Substantial variation in average pension amounts is also evident at the provincial level within individual autonomous communities. The highest provincial average pension in Spain was recorded in Alava, located in the Basque Country, at 1,709 euros per month.
Differences among the three provinces of the Basque Country remain small compared to other regions. Vizcaya recorded an average monthly pension of 1,696.55 euros, while Guipuzcoa registered 1,654.62 euros per month.
The lowest provincial figures in the country were recorded in the northwestern region of Galicia. Orense registered the lowest average monthly pension of any Spanish province at 1,026.19 euros, followed by Lugo at 1,088.80 euros per month.
Significant internal gaps were also recorded within individual territories. In Andalusia, pensioners in Cadiz received an average of 1,363.08 euros per month, compared to 1,134.72 euros in Almeria. In Castile and Leon, the province of Valladolid recorded an average of 1,493.74 euros per month, whereas Zamora stood at 1,194.57 euros.
Spain is divided into 50 provinces, which form the building blocks of its 17 autonomous communities. The data demonstrates that retirement income levels remain uneven both between regions and within them.
