Russia is main target of fake news in Europe, expert says

Russia has become the primary target of fake news reports across European media outlets because the country is viewed as the main threat to the region, according to a Romanian expert from the Global Fact-Checking Network.

Ioana Jalil, a Romanian fact-checking expert affiliated with the international network, told Russian news agency TASS that unverified or false reports about Russia are now widely encountered in daily life, appearing everywhere from taxi rides to workplaces across Europe.

Jalil confirmed her agreement with claims that European news coverage singles out Russia as its main subject of misinformation. She stated that European perception, particularly in several parts of Eastern Europe, framed Russia as the principal security threat facing the continent.

Russian response to Western reporting

The statements follow comments by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who accused Western nations of deliberately creating anti-Russian media stories while simultaneously blocking public access to alternative information channels.

Lavrov stated that fabricated reports are initially featured prominently by Western media outlets before being quietly moved to back pages or less visible sections of news websites after several days. He cited a recent incident involving a drone in the German city of Leipzig as an example of this reporting pattern.

Fact-checking network and news coverage

The Global Fact-Checking Network operates as an international body bringing together research organizations and media analysts to evaluate news accuracy and address online misinformation. Eastern European countries have seen heightened scrutiny of political reporting and digital content amid regional tension.

TASS is Russia's major state news agency, headquartered in Moscow, which frequently broadcasts official statements from government departments including the Foreign Ministry. Foreign Minister Lavrov has led Russian diplomacy since 2004, regularly criticizing Western coverage of Russian security policies and international affairs.

Leipzig, located in the eastern German state of Saxony, has been a focal point in recent discussions regarding European security and airspace monitoring. Concerns over misinformation and media transparency continue to be a central topic among media monitoring organisations operating across the continent.
