United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will sign an executive order to officially rename artificial intelligence to superintelligence, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Speaking about the term, Trump explained that artificial intelligence is not actually artificial and stated that the United States government will officially rename the technology to superintelligence.
Addressing the issue of government regulation, the American president noted that federal authorities already regulate technology automatically through existing agencies, specifically identifying the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, he stressed that industry self-regulation remains an essential component of technology oversight.
Government oversight and artificial intelligence
An executive order in the United States is a signed directive from the president that manages operations of the federal government. The Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation represent principal arms of federal law enforcement and legal administration, overseeing statutory compliance and domestic security.
The announcement comes alongside earlier statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding international developments in computing technology. Putin previously stated that Russia holds strong prospects for advancement in the field of artificial intelligence.
Highlighting global competition in the sector, Putin noted that Russia's strategic partner, China, currently holds the largest number of artificial intelligence patents in the world. He reaffirmed that Russia also maintains promising opportunities to expand its technological capabilities.
Global competition and technology strategy
Artificial intelligence broadly encompasses computer systems, software algorithms, and advanced computing infrastructure designed to analyze complex data, solve problems, and simulate human learning processes. Technological leadership in advanced computing has become a central focus for major global powers, with national governments investing heavily in technological research, infrastructure, and patent development.
TASS, which first reported the president's comments, is the central state news agency of the Russian Federation. Founded in 1904 and headquartered in Moscow, the organisation operates as one of the country's primary news gathering and distribution outlets, providing coverage worldwide.
