Luso-French filmmaker Ruben Alves premieres his new comedy film Santo António: O Casamenteiro de Lisboa across 53 Portuguese cinemas this Thursday.

The comedy centers on the chaotic situations surrounding the organization of Lisbon's traditional Saint Anthony mass weddings. Beyond the humorous plot, the film presents a deep reflection on a capital city that is becoming increasingly frantic, globalized, and multicultural.
Alves told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã that he felt Lisbon's traditional essence was disappearing to make way for urban uniformity. He noted that while modern society must adapt to a competitive world, people should pause to consider whether everyone truly wants to become identical.
Mass weddings and social reflection
Holding strong personal and professional ties to both Portugal and France, Alves said his dual cultural background allowed him to spot subtle details and beautiful contradictions in the city. He observed Lisbon with both deep familiarity and the fresh gaze of an outsider arriving from abroad.
The director had long wanted to shoot a project in Lisbon, praising the Portuguese capital for its unique light and poetic atmosphere. He selected the Saint Anthony weddings as a central theme because the tradition emphasizes community and unity, standing in sharp contrast to growing individualism in modern life.
Alves expressed concern over modern living patterns, stating that society seemed structured to keep individuals isolated at home, consuming fear of one another and relying on psychologists. Between romantic misadventures and comedic turns, the film asks what else residents are willing to surrender to pursue the future.
