Princess Eugenie has announced the birth and full name of her third child, a daughter named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, who was born in Portugal on August 3.
The 36-year-old royal waited two weeks before revealing her first daughter's name and sharing an official photograph of her face on Instagram. Previous images released to the public had shown only the back of the newborn child.
Writing on social media, Eugenie stated that two weeks prior, she and her husband Jack Brooksbank had welcomed their baby girl into the world. She added that the family had spent the subsequent fortnight enjoying exceptional, warm moments filled with love.
Eugenie explained that her daughter's name pays tribute to three people the couple love and admire from yesterday and today, with a special place in their hearts held for her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Choosing Elizabeth as a middle name has long been a tradition within the House of Windsor. Eugenie's elder sister Princess Beatrice, their cousin Zara Tindall, and Prince William's daughter Princess Charlotte all share the middle name Elizabeth. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan went even further by naming their daughter Lilibet after the late Queen's affectionate family nickname.
Anglo-Portuguese connections and family life
While Eugenie did not detail the specific origins of the names Adelaide and Annina, she noted that the full name is deeply rooted in the history of England and Portugal. The couple regard both countries as a second home and reside in Portugal for part of the year due to Brooksbank's employment there.
The official announcement featured a photograph of the newborn surrounded by her two elder brothers, five-year-old August, known as Augie, and three-year-old Ernest, known as Ernie. Eugenie noted in her caption that both boys were already proving to be formidable big brothers.
Princess Eugenie is the younger daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah, Duchess of York. She married Brooksbank, a British executive and wine merchant, in October 2018 during a ceremony at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. The historic venue has hosted numerous landmark royal weddings over the centuries.
Royal family context
The arrival of the new baby provides a gentle respite for the royal family amid ongoing public attention surrounding Eugenie's father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The former prince remains embroiled in legal troubles connected to his past relationship with the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, which previously led to him stepping back from official public duties.
Queen Elizabeth II served as Britain's monarch for seven decades before her passing in September 2022. In recent years, members of the British royal family have increasingly relied on official social media platforms as their primary channel to release personal statements, announce births, and share photographs directly with the global public.
