Portuguese online ticketing platform BOL invalidated 933 speculatively resold tickets before rapper Kanye West performed on Friday at Estádio do Algarve, the company announced on Tuesday.
The enterprise disclosed the operation in a statement sent to Portuguese news agency Lusa, confirming that the high-tech intervention targeted passes with an estimated total value between 250,000 euros and 350,000 euros.
The cancellation of the tickets took effect prior to the start of the performance and before fans passed through the entry gates of Estádio do Algarve. According to event promoters, the American musician played to a crowd of 34,000 spectators at the venue.
Kanye West, who also goes by the name Ye, is an American rapper, record producer, and fashion designer. Estádio do Algarve is a major sports and event arena situated in southern Portugal between Faro and Loulé.
Monitoring Resale Platforms
BOL explained that its team conducted extensive digital monitoring across multiple secondary market sales channels, including Viagogo, StubHub, TicketSwap, OLX, and Facebook. During this surveillance, investigators detected listings where ticket prices reached nearly double their original face value.
The company stated that the targeted action was designed to combat speculative ticket scalping practices and shield consumers from artificially inflated prices. At the same time, the measure aimed to reinforce the control that event promoters maintain over the circulation of admission passes.
Using in-house proprietary software developed in Portugal, BOL was able to trace and individually identify each ticket once a speculative resale transaction had taken place. The system then automatically executed the invalidation before ticket holders could gain entry to the venue.
First Large-Scale Deployment
BOL emphasized that the ability to intervene directly prior to the start of an event sets its operational system apart from standard ticketing procedures. While the platform had previously deployed the software primarily as a deterrent tool, the Kanye West concert marked the first time the system was executed on a large scale with full operational enforcement against resold tickets.
Sara Gonçalves, the chief operating officer of BOL, said in the statement that identifying and invalidating 933 tickets during a single event demonstrated how technology can grant promoters a level of control over the ticket life cycle that was previously difficult to achieve. She added that the successful operation proved the system can be replicated and deployed across other commercial markets.
BOL, short for Bilheteira Online, is one of the primary digital ticketing providers operating in Portugal, serving major concert halls, stadiums, and cultural venues nationwide.
Scaling Across the Event Industry
According to the ticketing platform, the results achieved at the Algarve show validate the underlying technology. The company noted that the system possesses strong potential to address a widespread problem affecting the entire live entertainment and sports sector, including music concerts, cultural shows, festivals, and high-demand sporting fixtures.
Gonçalves argued that the system was not designed merely as a one-off solution for a single concert. She highlighted that the proprietary technology was built entirely in Portugal, allowing BOL to continuously refine, scale, and apply the mechanism to future high-profile events across global markets.
The concert took place amid wider public attention in Portugal after the Israeli ambassador to Portugal requested the cancellation of Kanye West's scheduled performance in the Algarve.
