Long considered an exclusively female chemical associated solely with childbirth and nursing, current scientific evidence shows oxytocin functions in every human body to control emotional bonds and physiological responses.

Oxytocin is a neuropeptide hormone naturally produced in the hypothalamus, a small region of the brain that connects the nervous and endocrine systems. The hypothalamus also controls body temperature, appetite, thirst, sleep, and emotions.

Helping loved ones or volunteering raises hormone levels, as oxytocin provides a biological reward for acts of kindness.
