Odnoklassniki survey reveals daily Russian messaging habits

The Russian social network Odnoklassniki has revealed that 42 percent of its users send online messages every day, according to survey results released to Moscow online newspaper Lenta.ru.

Data from the research shows that daily digital messaging is even higher among older demographics and rural residents. For users over the age of 55 and people living in towns or villages with populations under 100,000, 45 percent send messages daily on the platform.

Odnoklassniki, which launched in 2006, is one of Russia's primary social networking services and is widely used across the country to maintain contact with classmates, friends, and relatives.

Messaging Habits and Reasons

The survey indicates that 74 percent of users write primarily to close relatives and acquaintances. Private messages are the sole method of communication for 71 percent of respondents, while 97 percent report using both direct messages and group chats. Among those who communicate on the platform every day, 52 percent do so to stay connected with family members who live far away.

When asked about their motives for reaching out, 53 percent of respondents selected holiday greetings as their main reason for messaging, while 40 percent cited a desire to check how their loved ones were doing. Generational differences also emerged from the data, as 56 percent of users under 34 frequently ask how someone is doing, whereas 42 percent of users over 55 prefer sending good day wishes.

For those who do not message on a daily basis, 40 percent explained that they either cannot find a suitable reason to write or lack the desire to share personal news. Additionally, 22 percent of respondents reported having insufficient time to keep up a conversation, and 16 percent attributed their hesitation to feeling awkward.

Group Chats and Account Activity

Group messaging remains a secondary feature for many users, with 14 percent of respondents creating or participating in group chats on Odnoklassniki. Among those active in group conversations, 67 percent interact with close friends and acquaintances, while 25 percent use them to keep in touch with immediate family.

Overall chat volume varies significantly across the user base. According to the survey, 33 percent of Russians maintain one or two active chats on the service, 17 percent manage three to five chats, and 15 percent stay active in more than 10 separate group or personal conversations.

The survey findings were reported by Lenta.ru editor Varvara Koshechkina. In previous features hosted on Odnoklassniki, users shared strategies for picking out gifts, while cardiologist Olga Shestova appeared on the platform's show Bez Khalatov to offer advice on slowing down the aging process.
