Romania recalls envoy from Kenya amid ‘racist scandal’ As CNN reports, Dragos Viorel Tigau compared monkeys to African diplomats during a meeting at the UN building in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
According to the BBC, Thiegau saw the monkeys outside his window and allegedly said, “an African group has joined us.”
The Kenyan Foreign Ministry protested. Romania apologized for the diplomat’s racism and decided to recall the ambassador. “We deeply regret this situation and apologize to all those affected. Any behavior or comments of a racist nature is completely unacceptable,” the ministry said in a statement. The Romanian ambassador also apologized after the incident, including in writing, the Foreign Ministry said.
At the same time, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya Kamau Macharia noted that attempts were made to hide the behavior of the Romanian ambassador.
Earlier, Romanian Ambassador Sorin Vasile was recalled from Armenia following anti-Semitic jokes about “Jewish bosses” and same-sex relationships.
