Finnish customs announced a suspended sentence for a man who, in July 2022, tried to smuggle two golf clubs and a smart watch into Russia, the value of which exceeded the allowed limit of 300 euros, writes the Wall Street Journal.
According to the publication, in June and July last year, the man withdrew 78 thousand euros from cards at ATMs and bought various goods for 50 thousand euros. Another 28,000 euros he brought to Russia in small batches, which required seven border crossings.
At one of the border crossings, the man was found to have 800 euros in cash, a smart watch worth about 800 euros and two golf clubs worth more than 1 thousand euros. In October, the county court of the southern region of Kymenlaakso sentenced him to a three-month suspended prison sentence for violating sanctions rules.
During the investigation, it was also found that earlier in the summer a man took echo sounders to Russia.
In total, according to Finnish customs, more than 250 cases have been opened due to illegal exports since February 24, 2022, including cases of attempts to smuggle luxury cars, sonars, heat pumps and cash.
