Musicians in the Dominican Republic are increasingly adopting the concert residency model, establishing fixed performance runs in single venues to create intimate experiences for audiences.
Techy, nominated for a Latin Grammy for her album "Chula", will stage her "Experiencia chula" residency this October at Velvet in The Green Room RD in Santo Domingo.
The limited-capacity shows will feature a full band playing pambiche, bachata, bolero, palo and merenhouse. The performances will include storytelling and stand-up elements, with the audience helping to select the repertoire. The run follows her first residency at Studio Theatre eight years ago.
Jazz and traditional merengue
Dominican saxophonist Sandy Gabriel will host a six-night jazz residency at The Green Room RD. The series runs on October 8 and 22, November 5 and 19, and December 1 and 17, featuring a different programme of national and international musicians each night.
Past local residencies include Jandy Ventura's "Johnny Vive" series, which ran every Saturday in March 2025 at the Hotel Jaragua in Santo Domingo. The performances recreated elements of the home of late merengue legend Johnny Ventura.
Caribbean stadium stops
Juan Luis Guerra previously brought the format to the Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana in 2020 for a four-concert run, which was interrupted by weather and the global pandemic.
Other artists have staged extended runs at major venues. Aventura and Romeo Santos drew an estimated 150,000 people over three nights at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo during their farewell tour in December 2024.
Singer Covi Quintana also held an immersive concert series based on her album at Casa de Teatro in late 2025, featuring guests such as Andres Cepeda, Pamel and Juan Vegas.
Internationally, Dominican-American artist Cardi B held a run of five to six shows at the KAOS complex at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas in 2019. The performances featured dancers, multiple costume changes and a 360-degree rotating DJ booth.
The format follows international precedents set by artists including Bad Bunny, who played 30 consecutive dates at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in 2025. Shakira also recently built a themed space called Macondo Park at the Iberdrola Music venue in Madrid for her Las mujeres ya no lloran tour.
